Age to Age in the McGregor Area

Age to Age is an intergenerational initiative launched by the Northland Foundation in northeastern Minnesota. In the McGregor area, Age to Age creates meaningful opportunities for young people to connect with older adults, building relationships that support learning, growth, and a stronger community.

Age to Age Program Connecting Youth and Adults

Building Connections Across Generations

Through these connections, youth gain valuable skills, guidance, and encouragement from positive adult role models. At the same time, older adults benefit from increased social engagement and meaningful opportunities to teach, volunteer, and help guide program development.

A Shared Learning Experience

At its core, Age to Age brings youth and adults together through activities that foster reciprocal, supportive relationships. These are not one-sided interactions—both generations learn from each other.

As a result:

  • Youth are better prepared to meet life’s challenges
  • Young people develop stronger decision-making skills
  • Adults remain active, engaged, and connected
  • The entire community becomes more supportive and resilient

Programs That Strengthen Literacy and Relationships

Reading Pals and Grand Friends

Age to Age has developed and sustained school-based programs like Reading Pals and Grand Friends, where older adults read and write with children in grades K–3. These programs serve as a pathway to increased literacy while building strong, lasting relationships between generations.

These connections often extend beyond the classroom, creating bonds that continue to grow within the community.

Extending Learning into the Community

Relationships formed through Age to Age don’t stop at school. By partnering with the McGregor Public Library, these connections continue through shared activities like story time and community learning events.
This collaboration helps create a true learning community—one that spans generations and strengthens the fabric of the McGregor area.

Community Impact: The Thrive Center

The impact of Age to Age is visible throughout the community, including the development of the Thrive Center and its outdoor gathering space. The outdoor gathering space was funded by the kind generosity of the Blandin Foundation.

This welcoming space includes:

  • A community garden
  • Shaded areas for gathering
  • Comfortable seating
  • Recreational opportunities

The Thrive Center serves as a place where people of all ages can come together, connect, and grow.

A More Livable McGregor Community for All Ages

Age to Age has helped foster a more livable, connected community in the McGregor area. By bringing generations together, the program strengthens relationships, encourages lifelong learning, and creates opportunities for everyone to contribute.

When youth and adults support one another, the entire community benefits—today and into the future.
